Kim’s strategy for ending child poverty

Kim is going to solve child poverty in the North East and has an action plan to do so. See here: file:///C:/Users/daveb/Downloads/NE%20Child%20Poverty%20Action%20Plan.pdf

Frankly most of this is the usual well intentioned guff but this assertion is frankly offensive: Kim is going to:

Get more money into families’ pockets – supporting all to receive their entitlements through expanded advice and take-up campaigns.

This in a context where the Labour Party that slotted her into office has shamefully maintained the Tories’ two child benefit cap. The consequences of this are that at least 1,9 million children in the UK are in poverty, one in nine of all children. It reduces the income of those families subject to it by at least £3,500 a year. The North East region as a whole has the highest proportion of families and children affected by this cap of any UK region -12% (Resolution Foundation),

Kim presents her plans to audiences composed of the kind of poverty professionals dependent on grant funding and state employees also in the game so there is nobody present to tell her to either tell her  political masters to abandon the cap or threaten to resign if they do not. Since that would probably lead to Reform winning an election to replace her that might put the frighteners on Starmer and the Labour machine. Chances of  Kim developing any sign of personal courage and commitment to really ending child poverty – ZERO.

Today -21st July 2025- according to the Journal Kim has repeated her call for the two child benefit cap to be scrapped, but here are the weasel words in her statement: I need to make clear my views and let the government get on with running the country.” That is to say I will be pious but do nothing which might force action on this issue. See above – threaten to resign and terrify the gombeen free stater who runs Labour’s machine into making Starmer do something real. (my connections are with the Northern Irish working class, catholic – my tribe – and protestant and I have no time for a free stater who, unusually in the Republic these days, is also an arch zionist). Threaten to resign because in the current climate you would lose the election to Reform or even to a real socialist candidate who unlike Driscoll could run a socialist campaign and not endorse free ports with the power to remove trade union rights and reduce environmental protections.
